Yes. Ongoing stress can increase cortisol, which may reduce the body’s ability to activate thyroid hormone and can slow metabolism. Many people notice fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, constipation, or feeling cold during prolonged periods of stress.
Yes. When your brain is focused on survival, it temporarily places less priority on reproduction. Over time, this may contribute to lower estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA levels, leading to symptoms such as low libido, irregular periods, reduced muscle mass, fatigue, and poor motivation.
DHEA is an adrenal hormone involved in energy, resilience, immune function, and hormone production. Low DHEA levels, especially when combined with an abnormal cortisol pattern, may suggest that chronic stress has affected your body’s ability to adapt.
They can. Chronic infections and ongoing inflammation may keep the immune system activated, which can influence stress hormones, thyroid function, and reproductive hormones. Identifying and treating the underlying cause may be an important part of restoring hormonal balance.
Survival mode describes a protective response where the brain prioritizes keeping you alive rather than optimizing energy, metabolism, or reproduction. This response is helpful during short-term stress but may contribute to persistent symptoms if it remains activated for months or years.
The HPTA axis is how I explain my clinical framework for understanding how the Hypothalamus, Pituitary, Thyroid, Adrenal glands, and reproductive hormones work together. Rather than looking at one hormone in isolation, I assess how stress, inflammation, sleep, nutrition, and chronic illness may be affecting the entire hormone network. Traditionally these systems are known individually as the HPG, HPT, and HPA axis, however my clinical experience has found these systems work as an integrated network. Thus I prefer to explain it as the HPTA Axis.
Standard laboratory tests identify disease, but they don’t always explain why someone feels unwell. During your assessment, I combine your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and laboratory findings to look for patterns that may suggest early hormone or metabolic dysfunction.
Hormones can be an important part of treatment for the right patient, but they don’t always address the underlying cause of why hormone levels changed. I also look for factors such as chronic stress, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, inflammation, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, or infections that may be contributing to your symptoms.
These hormones are regulated by the brain and constantly communicate with one another. When cortisol remains elevated for long periods, the body may slow thyroid activity and reduce sex hormone production to conserve energy until the stress has resolved.
My goal is to help your body move from a prolonged survival response back toward optimal health. That means identifying and addressing the root causes affecting your hormone network while using medications, nutraceuticals, and lifestyle interventions when they are appropriate.
Absolutely. Sleep is when the brain resets many hormone pathways, including cortisol, growth hormone, thyroid regulation, and reproductive hormones. Improving sleep quality is often one of the most effective ways to support hormone health.
These systems are interconnected and influence one another every day. Looking at them together often provides a more complete picture of your health than evaluating each hormone individually.
